DkIT Hosts 25 French students as part of a Computing Workshop

11 May 2019

DkIT’s Department of Visual & Human-Centred Computing recently hosted a group of 25 students from the French college Institut Universitaire Technologie de Lens. The aim of the visit was to give the students the opportunity to work alongside DkIT’s 2nd Year BSc (Hons) in Computing students on a web-application development project.

The primary function of the workshop was to teach the French and Irish students new, cutting-edge, web development technologies. While visiting DkIT, the French students were hosted by Irish students. The purpose of this was to help develop the personal ties and friendship between the two groups of students.

The French embassy in Dublin has also taken a keen interest in the project. The embassy’s Science Attaché, Dr. Marc Daumas, paid a visit during the workshop. He expressed the embassy’s support for the work that is being done by both colleges. He took the opportunity to chat with the participating students and staff about the benefits of international, multicultural projects.

DkIT’s Derek O’Reilly who is a Senior Lecturer in Computing and Department Erasmus Coordinator commented that,

It’s so important for our students to be given the opportunity to meet and work alongside students from other countries. This is just one of many occasions where our Computing and our Computing in Games Development students have had the chance to work in a multinational setting. Just recently, we had a group develop an anti-racism game along with other European students in Antwerp, Belgium. This type of experience is unparalleled and gives our students a competitive edge once they graduate!”

This workshop has been running throughout the academic year, students have been in contact with each other throughout the semesters and have spent time working on things digitally. Next academic year, the DkIT students will return to France and continue working on their projects but this time they will be joined with students from the University of Lodz, Poland.
